Bricked~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~:-(

This thread is just going to turn into a spam flam war itself enjoy and have fun here. Live Love Laugh

Yesterday was somethin. Infendo was ablaze with opinionated bloggers and angry commenters. Atypical for it, usually things run smoothly there. Jack and i lit a fire under its ass, for better or worse. I also tackled his statements here on the ever-caring Intendo.

Somehow, Joystiq caught wind of our post, via my citymate James Ransom-Wiley. I swear this man wants a swordfight with me…and i’d happily oblige. This is the second time James has come to my rescue with Nintendo matters, although last time the scales were tipped against my favor. No complaints here, i quite like the support. I wonder if he’s a quiet fan, has a man-crush, or if it’s just that “birds of a feather” ideology at work. He’s not as much as a Nintendo person as i am, yet we agree on many things regarding them. That’s why this site exists, i love it.

I want to say to 4cr, sorry about what i said in the previous post where i kind of directed my words at all of you, but i wrote it after reading your article in a feed, which gives no name and hence why i didn’t single Benny out until i read it on the site. No hard feelings. Turns out you guys have a kickass readership, i had no idea. I used to listen to your podcasts about a year ago while playing Mario Kart, so i am familiar with a few of you and respect ya. Mass repect for having such cool readers. That shows you guys have versatility.

High command at Infendo and the readers themselves ragged on me quite a bit for what i said about the Wii games, successfully finishing what Jack started and managing to piss off every single person that has anything to do with that site in the span of one day. I didn’t mean to, but i guess i’ve gotten so comfortable in my surroundings at intendo that i didn’t realize people would get offended for showing such distaste for something they (and you can thank Reggie for this) hold dear. I came on strong, stronger than i intended, but that’s how it goes with these things. Nothing i can do except walk on eggshells from now on.

These 2 days have justified this site’s existence tenfold. The Gears of War story was bandied about on Destructoid (which has the greatest commenters i’ve ever seen), 4cr, and Joystiq; and everyone who disagreed with the argument that GoW’s 10’s are Wii’s proof of purchase, whether they discussed it soundly or viciously, gave a glowing endorsement for us and made us feel not so alone in the videogame realm anymore. We have a place, and will continue being the cynical bringers of truth and disspellers of delusion as we see fit. Never, ever will we confuse cynicism for pessimism — critique of your favorite companies or games highlight where they need to improve, not what the other companies are doing better.

That’s enough of that

David "Judy Miller in drag" Sanger is at it again, with a finely crafted bit of stenography in the NY Times today which says the Bush administration are drawing up plans to reduce troops in Iraq next year by up to half.

Which, as both Glenn Greenwald and Big Tent Democrat point out, is not the first time we've heard such empty promises for political purposes - and therefore are as believable now as they've ever been.

Prairie Weather catches the real news in the story, sourced as it is from leaks by "senior administration officials". The actual plan is to stay in Iraq forever. Here's the key graph of "Judy" Sanger's whole article:

The officials cautioned that no firm plans have emerged from the discussions. But they said the proposals being developed envision a far smaller but long-term American presence, centering on three or four large bases around Iraq. Mr. Bush has told recent visitors to the White House that he was seeking a model similar to the American presence in South Korea.

Let's be clear about that, shall we - Bush's plan is for more than a dozen huge bases and a constant presence numbering in the tens of thousands over more than three decades. Which is what quite a few people have been saying was Bush's real plan all along.

Sanger writes that Dick Cheney may not go along with the plan, because even a partial withdrawal might embolden Al Qaeda, thus proving that his sources are from the Cheney camp. There's no way on earth Cheney would disagree with a plan to keep the US in Iraq forever - this is pure disininformation, a red herring. Captain Ed, a sure touchstone of the neocon war-hawk temper, shows why:

We cannot leave Iraq altogether and fight Islamist terrorism. They're attempting to base themselves in western Iraq, with Syrian assistance. We can't fight that by deploying to Okinawa and leaving the region to the radicals. This planning takes that reality and adapts our military approach to it. It should come as no surprise at all that the Pentagon and the White House have already begun thinking about the next phase of the war.

The differences between Iraq and South Korea being, mostly, that the Iraqis are still likely to be using those American super-bases for target practise decades from now, ratcheting up the casualties a few at a time, and that the bases in Iraq will be a provocation destined to create more Islamist terrorists by their very existence than their occupants will ever manage to kill.

The Bush Plan B - war forever. It was actually Plan A all along and the Democrats just handed him a blank check for it.

Update Time for more KremlinWatch D.C. as Bill Kristol, one of Cheney's staff of outreach Wormtongues, puts the inevitable next-day spin on the story.

"The president apparently was furious about the New York Times article Saturday. One senior White House official went out of his way to call me Saturday and left me a voicemail saying that. So, since they don’t normally do that on Saturdays, I think maybe it’s even true."

When a liar insists something may be true, check you still have your wallet.

Kristol also told Fox News that it is "irresponsible for people in the State Department, the Defense Department or the White House to be leaking this stuff which they have no idea whether it’s practical."

Nice move, blaming the leak on the "enemy" faction inside the administration. If it really had been that faction, they wouldn't have mentioned Bush plans for a South Korean style of permanent basing. Kristol says the troop reduction part is rubbish, which leaves just the permanent bases. It has Cheney written all over it.

Flim-flam
When Andrew Krepinevich briefed senior congressional staff on the government/military thinking behind the current "surge" at the end of February, what he left with them by way of "materials" was only a bullet-point outline. Colin Kahl tried to flesh out the presentation in his listserve essay that Juan Cole excerpted. The whole available package, such as it is, (bullet-point outline and Kahl essay) is available at smallwarsjournal.com. See also the two prior posts here.

What first jumps out at you is what Krepinevich very delicately called the "Roman option" (aka, on his p 21, the "Roman and Halliburton options"), which he glosses on page 4 as "massive retaliation", with the proviso that this is not likely to be implemented by the US "except in the most dire of circumstances". In expanding on the idea in his listserv essay, Kahl doesn't make the obvious point you would expect to hear, namely that this would involve war crimes and crimes against humanity, rather he says only that it is "incompatible with norms against targeting civilians embraced by the U.S. military and political leadership". You don't have to think back very far to remind yourself of the big difference between crimes against humanity and "norms...embraced by the US military and political leadership". Just think of the discussion about torture. In any event, this "massive retaliation" option is something that comes up in the Krepinevich briefing on counterinsurgency, and in the widely-circulated discussion that followed it. Widely-circulated, but of course we do not know who attended the briefing, or who is on the listserv that Kahl posted to, or who else has been in on the discussion.

That's point one: There has been a widely-circulated discussion of counterinsurgency doctrine and practices, and it included discussion of the "massive retaliation" option, tagging in only as something currently "incompatible with norms...", and not tagging it as a crime against humanity. Point two is that some of the same people are trying to promote another discussion, this one that the general public is being invited to participate in, and that has to do, importantly, not with counterinsurgency doctrine and practice, but rather with "civil war" doctrine and practice.

Here's where the flim-flam comes in. In the counterinsurgency discussions, the "massive retaliation" option is left hanging, something currently "not compatible with norms", or as the Krepinevich outline puts it: not likely to be implemented "except in the most dire of circumstances." The alternatives in this discussion are either (1) success of the current "COIN best practices" approach, or (2) what to do in the (very likely) event of failure. The discussion comes down to how to respond to a likely failure, and the last of Krepinevich's bullet-points on page 21, having discussed the decline in numbers and quality in the official US armed forces, reads: "Hired Guns: The Roman and Halliburton options" (where "Roman", as noted above, is Krepinevich's euphemism for massive retaliation against civilians).

The "civil war" discussion being proposed for public discussion in the vibrant American democracy, is a little different, in a big way. Kahl himself has published a version of this on the Foreign Policy magazine website, and it is quite interesting how this differs from the "counterinsurgency" discussion. The "civil war" options, Kahl says, are essentially two: (1) Stay, and take sides, by which he means side with the Shiite majority fighting Sunnis; or (2) withdraw, and provide only humanitarian or palliative assistance in things like ethnic relocation. (In other versions, there is also a third option, which is to withdraw to mega-bases and carry out the odd bombing raid here and there, as necessary, in order to maintain some degree of leverage in the outcome).

So the problem being proposed for urgent public discussion in the vibrant American democracy is a completely different problem from that being discussed in private by the policy elite. The policy elite is discussing what to do if America can't quell the resistance to its occupation using "best practices", and the options are to withdraw, or kick back and try the last-resort "Roman option", perhaps with the help of some "hired guns". The vibrant democracy is discussing what do do if the civil war continues, and the options are to withdraw, or stay and take sides. And curiously enough, what happens is that staying and taking sides (fighting Sunnis, in other words) is presented as something that is more in keeping with America's "moral obligations in Iraq", because having American soldiers along side Shiite forces "might be the only way to minimize atrocities". So when you boil it down, the policy-elite is discussing non-withdrawal in the interest of a last-resort scorched-earth policy by America, but at the same time presenting this as non-withdrawal in the interest of fulfilling America's moral obligation to help minimize atrocities.

That's the flim-flam. If you say "civil war" enough times, you create the illusion that America doesn't have a dog in the fight, and staying would be the only morally-right thing to do.

Who can we expect to beat the drum for this? That's what Krepinevich wanted to know. As he said on page 18 of his presentation: "The administration has lost control of the narrative, and lost popular confidence--who can/should explain the war to the American people?" That's easy, really: start with political scientists.

PSP Bricked while updating :(
Here's the story: yesterday, I was updating my PSP, forgot to put the battery cover on the PSP, the battery fell out of the PSP, when I put the battery back in, I turned the PSP on, and only the green light showed up instead of the whole thing turning on and the screen was blank with no pictures, logo, sound, nothing. :(

Can someone give me a link to recover my PSP to 1.50?

I still have my all-in-one card reader by Lexar.

HELP!!!

no recovery for official sony updates
sorry for your loss
"he was.... a good psp!"

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Lol. Well you shouldn't have been updating if you seriously think you can recover from a Official Sony Update. That will teach you to only use custom firmware, cuz if anything goes wrong........... your covered! Maybe Sony should implement this.

What are you talking about Sony isn't as smart as we think they are? I don't see you working for Sony at all, does that make you dumber than Sony?

It isn't like the Sony president ran into his room and removed the battery cover from his PSP while he was upgrading. Sony had nothing to do with the brick. Don't blame Sony because they made a great product. :smileyindifferent:

Yawn... go play your other box and give us a break.

In before lock:smileymad:

i wonder did you read the release date on ign or any other website out there, i'm sure there's going to be a couple of interesting game coming out this month. its already the second going into third week, a couple more days and more games to add to the library. that is if you really are a gamer and not some idiot who doesn't appreciate one but keep asking for good game when you yourself doesn't realize what a game is.

dude, the darkness comes out the 25th.
ninja gaiden sigma 26th,
rs:vegas 26th.

get over yourself if you dont like one of those games, then thats to bad, lair is coming out late july early august. Plenty of good games before nascar.

Unless there has been a delay announced today, there should be a rule against these threads. What do you guys do? Wake up every morning and go, "Oh, yeah... Lair doesn't come out today! WAH!" It doesn't come out tomorrow either, so try to remember that before you hit that submit button.

I am sure there are other great games coming out of the horizon from summer like the ones mentioned by others. Sometime a delayed game can lead to a good game, while a rush game can be bad forever.

complaining on these boards isn't gonna make games come out any quicker.

Gosh... talk about dense. Launch consoles mean nothing to you. Right. You'll be swimming in games soon enough. Can hardly wait so we won't have to listen to BOX OWNERS who are unhappy because most of the games until now have been PORTS. Check the release list.

This same ole tune day after day gets really old.

Well, since I've had my "last warning" from the mods, I'll just report you. Bye now.

yeah maybe...but so does the constant responses from the people who defend it, "wait", "patience", "go outside", "get a life", "grow up", "guess you've never had a launch console"....PS3 is hardly "in its infancy" anymore...considering it was a year late, and its been out for 7 months...come on, when are people gonna say, ok, yes, we want some games NOW...1 game aint cuttin it for 7 months, even u know that...and yes, other consoles from launch to 7 months had more than 1 game.

They'll be saying the same thing a year from now if there werent any games out. Such blindness, I pitty you

PS3 has more than one game. Just cuz you don't like the selection, doesn't mean no one does. With the other console, I hated FPSs and online-centric games, and that's ALLLLL they're good for. So.... yeah.

1 Game. Ok, and I'm the fanboy. For you there is one game worth playing.

Does the sun come up in the morning and set at night? Do new consoles need to wait for games to hit while there are being developed? The fact that ports are the prime item on the dinner menu at the moment is who's fault exactly? You own the other system so, why is it that we who aren't unhappy, have to continually listen to people like you complain there are no games.

You should have waited. There was no rush to go out and buy a system if you ALREADY owned one. If you are that unhappy sell it.
